At her engagement party, she escapes the crowd to consider whether to go through with the marriage and falls down a hole in the garden after spotting an unusual rabbit. Arriving in a strange and surreal place called 'Underland,' she finds herself in a world that resembles the nightmares she had as a child, filled with talking animals, villainous queens and knights, and frumious bandersnatches. Alice realizes that she is there for a reason--to conquer the horrific Jabberwocky and restore the rightful queen to her throne. What a over-rated, self-indulgent movie. ![]() Right from the inclusion of Johnny Deep in a maddening avatar to Helena Carter as the tyrant witch witch an oblong head, Tim Burton yet makes another movie that is barely watchable and completely loony, in a bad way. Mia Wasikowska stars or rather pales as Alice, devoid of emotion or interest. Her pale, frail look gets on one's nerves as she sleepwalks throughout the film, with an expressionless countenance that feels weakens the movie significantly. ![]() The scenes where she is supposed to be brave look rehearsed and forced. In fact, I and my friends got so bugged that we wanted her clothes to fall off so that she could create some stir in the audience! Anne Hathaway, vibrant and exquisite in Rachel Getting Married, gives a superficial portrayal of the kind and loving White Queen. Poor soul is soulless in the movie as she tries hard to be Meryl Streep or Julie Andrews but falters. Why did Tim have to cast her for a role more suitable for an older actress? Though miscast, she at least tries to make a character of her own, unlike Mia, but looks robotic. In fact, she looked like a typical deceiving hag who would bear her fangs anytime. 'Oh, she's wearing white! Symbolizes peace. She must be the good one' but unfortunately, she ends up getting wasted. And even though her performance is being berated by a number of viewers, I feel that she at least tries to get into her role. Wish she didn't look so hideous here! Mad Hatter is played by the outlandish Johnny Depp but he too doesn't cast much impact in his half-baked role. None of the characters, including him, connects with the audience. None are very likable. I remember, in Chronicles of Narnia, where though the main four Britishers aren't versatile actors, but the supporting cast shines. Tilda Swinton was towering, tormenting and impactful. Aslan, though not a real character, still was very likable. Here, everyone is mundane and lifeless. Depp still tries to give his fullest but the dreary pace of the film outweighs him since his performance isn't groundbreaking or any of that sort. And I'm not a hater of Johnny or Tim Burton (loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, liked Timm's Batman, Johnny's What's eating Gilbert Grape?) Helena plays the Red Queen in a quirky fashion that gets customary and monotonous. She plays the role differently though, not the traditional ones who are mostly staunch and resolute. Instead, she plays a role similar to Meryl Streep's in She-Devil, who gives herself too much airs. She is funny and redeeming for a while. Then she grates because she does the same act throughout the movie and makes her performance one-dimensional. Crispin Grover is tolerable. Tweedledum and Tweedledee are neither funny nor likable, overbearing at times. The story is tedious and the animation prosaic. The real world characters are so full of themselves and don't supply anything to the movie. The final scene is a bit implausible and rushed. Well, it was a long, long, unending journey in the theater for me. Certainly a huge disaster from a talented guy. 1 out of 10 stars and a thumbs down.

Their harrowing story was told in the 1993 film Alive, but the real-life trauma of his weeks in the icy waste remains with Dr Canessa. He told writer Tom Goodenough that the cold in his bones was like pliers being pressed down on them. He said: 'We were in a lifeless environment with only snow and stars up. 1993 R 2h 6m. He was portrayed by Ethan Hawke in the 1993 feature film Alive: Miracle in The Andes. ON FRIDAY 13 October 1972, a Fairchild aircraft of the Uruguayan air force, chartered by an amateur rugby team from Montevideo to play a match in Chile, disappeared as it flew over the Andes. After eight days, the search for survivors was abandoned. It was assumed that even if any of the 45 passengers and crew had survived the crash, they would surely by now have died from hunger and cold. Ten weeks later a Chilean peasant in a valley deep in the Andes saw the figures of two men. These were two of the 16 survivors. Helicopters rescued the rest and flew them to Santiago. The news leaked out that they had survived the ordeal by eating the flesh of their companions. The 16 returned to Montevideo to find newspapers and publishers eager to sign them up to tell their story. The company eventually selected was the North American publisher J B Lippinkott. ![]() The author chosen was me. There were both hopes and fears for a film of Alive even before the book was written. The survivors of 'the miracle of the Andes' found it easier to envisage themselves on the screen than in print; they were mostly outdoor types, keen on riding, swimming and above all rugby. Roberto Canessa, a medical student and one of the two 'expeditionaries' who walked out of the Andes to find help, said the manuscript of Alive was 'too fat'. ![]() A novel of mine was worse. 'How can you expect anyone to read it? Three hundred pages, and it isn't even true]' Nando Parrado, the other expeditionary, applied himself to the idea of a movie with the same energy and determination he had shown on the mountain. Quite unembarrassed by the cannibalism ('it was the only way to survive'), he was eager to play himself in the film. The others were more circumspect. Not all had been as heroic as Parrado and Canessa. Roy Harley had wept as he struggled to get back from an expedition to find the tail of the aircraft; Bobby Francois had remained passive throughout the ordeal; Pancho Delgado was suspected of stealing toothpaste and cigarettes from the meagre stores. All were afraid that they might appear in a gory, Hammer-style horror film; and so they insisted on a clause in the contract with the publisher giving them the right to veto the sale of the film rights to the book. But they were as eager as I was to make some money, and when an approach was made to buy the film rights, the survivors agreed - on certain conditions. The producer had to guarantee that 'nothing in the film based on the work will subject the characters presented, whether living or dead, to mockery, ridicule or contempt, such as is understood in contemporary terms'. He had to guarantee that 'all parts of the film that have to do with the consumption of human flesh for the purpose of survival will be treated with careful consideration for the persons represented and for their families'. The first offer fell through, but in 1974, after the publication of the book, the rights were bought by a company called Palomar Pictures in conjunction with United Artists. Then there was silence. Presumably the producers wanted to exploit their property without the help of anyone who might think they knew better. There were rumours that Harold Pinter had been asked to write the script, that William Goldman had actually written a draft, that United Artists were planning to build a town in the Andes to house the technicians which would then be sold to the Chilean government as a ski resort. Meanwhile, in Mexico, an enterprising company made a film of a book on the same subject, based on cuttings and other sources in the public domain. It was called Survive], and had been published before Alive. Paramount bought the distribution rights to the Mexican movie, dubbed it into English, and released it successfully throughout the world. I went to see it with Gustavo Zerbino, one of the survivors, who was passing through London at the time. Now and then he would jump up and shout: 'No, it wasn't like that, that's not how it happened.' The success of Survive] led United Artists to abandon their plans for Alive. Subsequently, I was told that Paramount, for fear of what United Artists might do in revenge for the sabotage of their film, had bought the rights to Alive from the profits of Survive]. From time to time, Nando Parrado would ring up from Montevideo, Rio, Marbella or New York - he had become something of a celebrity as a result of the book - asking if I had news of the movie. I had none and as the years passed it seemed less and less likely that it would ever be made. In the spring of 1991, however, the project was suddenly revived. Some of the executives who had been at United Artists in the Seventies were now at Disney and remembered Alive. A script was commissioned from Monte Merrick, who had written the screenplay for Memphis Belle, and it was offered by Jeffrey Katzenberg, the head of Disney, to Frank Marshall, the director of Arachnophobia, a thriller about poisonous spiders. Marshall and his wife, Kathleen Kennedy, belonged to the inner circle of Hollywood film-makers. Both were founding partners in Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment and had worked as producers on ET, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Back to the Future. Marshall, who wanted to develop his career as a director, agreed to make Alive. Kennedy brought in an Englishman, Robert Watts, as co-producer. Dissatisfied with Merrick's script, they commissioned another from Paul Attanasio, a former film critic of the Washington Post. In the meantime, Disney discovered that it did not own the rights to Alive. They rested with Paramount, who had bought them from United Artists all those years ago. To solve the problem, a co-production deal was done - a rare thing between studios - with both companies contributing towards the estimated dollars 20m budget, and with Disney distributing the film in the US and Paramount throughout the rest of the world. In November 1991, the production team flew to Uruguay to meet the survivors. Marshall had been to South America before, filming in the jungles of Venezuela for Arachnophobia. Uruguay was different, and he found in the survivors, as I had done 19 years earlier, a group of warm, colourful and occasionally impossible people. They were now middle-aged men, some with grown-up children; he came away with a sense of grave responsibility towards the story of their struggle to survive. At this stage, it was envisaged that part of the film would show the plane's departure from Uruguay. The production designer, Norman Reynolds, found four planes of the correct type - Fairchild F-227 twin-engined turboprops - which were bought for use in the film. Nando, now too old to play himself, was taken on as technical adviser, and the Australian director Jill Fullerton-Smith was commissioned to make a documentary about the making of Alive and the lives of the survivors. Rejecting the second script, Marshall and Kennedy commissioned a third version from John Patrick Shanley, who had won an Academy Award for Moonstruck. In this the drama focused on what happened in the plane and on the mountain. Scenes of the parents' search for their children were cut out, and the 10-day walk through the mountains by Parrado and Canessa limited to a few frames towards the end. Apart from two cliffhanging scenes (one literally a cliffhanger, the other a close encounter with a crevasse), nothing was in the film that was not in the book. Special effects were put to good use in filming the crash itself. Marshall was determined to make it as terrifying and realistic as he could. Otherwise, he concentrated on replicating the conditions which the survivors endured in their 70 days on the mountain. Filming at 3,000m on the Delphine glacier in British Columbia, they not only matched the conditions but also, in casting, the appearance of many of the young Uruguayans so exactly that I was able to recognise who they were playing without being told. Originally intending to use unknown actors from Mexico, Argentina and Spain, they ended up with North American actors such as Ethan Hawke, Josh Hamilton and Vincent Spano playing the young survivors, and John Malkovich as the adult Carlitos Paez. Enormous trouble was taken, on Parrado's advice, to 'make the costumes as varied and filthy as they had been in the Andes'. The actors were put on a diet: Ethan Hawke lost more than 20lb while making the film. Large parts of the story, and many important characters, had to be sacrificed to fit the dimensions of a two- hour film. Some of the survivors felt angry that they had been excluded, and that the film was just the 'Fernando Parrado story'; while others who had played less than heroic roles would have preferred not have been in the film at all. Overall, however, the survivors have been well served. Avoiding both pretentiousness and sensationalism, Marshall's film of Alive treats the cannibalism with great delicacy, and elicits from the actors exactly the right blend of childishness, heroism and religious faith. It shows the audience in painstaking detail just what these Uruguayans endured. 'Alive' is released on 30 April. Jill Fullerton-Smith's film, 'Alive 20 Years On', is on BBC1 tonight at 10.25pm. Piers Paul Read's book is available as a Mandarin paperback ( pounds 4.99). (Photograph omitted) • More about: • • • •. From album: Alicia Augello Cook (born January 25, 1981), better known by her stage name Alicia Keys, is an American recording artist, musician and actress. She was raised by a single mother in the Hell's Kitchen area of Manhattan in New York City, New York, United States. At age seven, Keys began to play classical music on the piano. She attended Professional Performing Arts School and graduated at 16 as valedictorian. She later attended Columbia University before dropping out to pursue her music career. Keys released her debut album with J Records, having had previous record deals first with Columbia and then Arista Records. Throughout her career, Keys has won numerous awards including 14 Grammy awards and has sold over 75 million records worldwide. Billboard magazine named her the top R&B artist of the 2000–2009 decade, establishing herself as one of the best-selling artists of her time. In 2010, VH1 included Keys on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Keys released her first studio album, Songs in A Minor, in June 2001. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and sold 236,000 copies in its first week. The album sold over 6.2 million copies in the United States, where it was certified six times Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It went on to sell over 13 million copies worldwide, establishing Keys' popularity both inside and outside the United States, where she became the best-selling new artist and best-selling R&B artist of 2001. Songs in A Minor led Keys to win five awards at the 2002 Grammy Awards: Song of the Year, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and Best R&B Song for Fallin', Best New Artist, and Best R&B Album; Fallin' was also nominated for Record of the Year. Keys became the second female solo artist to win five Grammy Awards in a single night, following Lauryn Hill at the 41st Grammy Awards. That same year, she collaborated with Christina Aguilera for the latter's upcoming album Stripped on a song entitled Impossible, which Keys wrote, co-produced, and provided with background vocals. During the early 2000s, Keys also made small cameos in television series Charmed and American Dreams. Keys followed up her debut with The Diary of Alicia Keys, which was released in December 2003. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling over 618,000 copies its first week of release, becoming the largest first-week sales for a female artist in 2003. The fourth single, Karma, was less successful on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 20. If I Ain't Got You became the first single by a female artist to remain on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for over a year. Keys won Best R&B Video for If I Ain't Got You at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards; she performed the song and Higher Ground with Lenny Kravitz and Stevie Wonder. Later that year, Keys released her novel Tears for Water: Songbook of Poems and Lyrics, a collection of unreleased poems from her journals and lyrics. ![]() ![]() The title derived from one of her poems, 'Love and Chains' from the line: 'I don't mind drinking my tears for water.' She said the title is the foundation of her writing because 'everything I have ever written has stemmed from my tears of joy, of pain, of sorrow, of depression, even of question'. The book sold over US$500,000 and Keys made The New York Times bestseller list in 2005. The following year, she won a second consecutive award for Best R&B Video at the MTV Video Music Awards for the video Karma. Keys performed If I Ain't Got You and then joined Jamie Foxx and Quincy Jones in a rendition of Georgia on My Mind, the Hoagy Carmichael song made famous by Ray Charles in 1960 at the 2005 Grammy Awards. That evening, she won four Grammy Awards: Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for If I Ain't Got You, Best R&B Song for You Don't Know My Name, Best R&B Album for The Diary of Alicia Keys, and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals' for My Boo with Usher. Keys performed and taped her installment of the MTV Unplugged series in July 2005 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. During this session, Keys added new arrangements to her original songs and performed a few choice covers. The session was released on CD and DVD in October 2005. Simply titled Unplugged, the album debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart with 196,000 units sold in its first week of release. The album sold one million copies in the United States, where it was certified Platinum by the RIAA, and two million copies worldwide. The debut of Keys' Unplugged was the highest for an MTV Unplugged album since Nirvana's 1994 MTV Unplugged in New York and the first Unplugged by a female artist to debut at number one. The album's first single, Unbreakable, peaked at number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number four on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. It remained at number one on the Billboard Hot Adult R&B Airplay for 11 weeks. Keys opened a recording studio in Long Island, New York, called The Oven Studios, which she co-owns with her production and songwriting partner Kerry 'Krucial' Brothers. The studio was designed by renowned studio architect John Storyk of WSDG, designer of Jimi Hendrix' Electric Lady Studios. Keys and Brothers are the co-founders of KrucialKeys Enterprises, a production and songwriting team who assisted Keys in creating her albums as well as create music for other artists. In 2006, Keys won three NAACP Image Awards, including Outstanding Female Artist and Outstanding Song for Unbreakable. She also received the Starlight Award by the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In October 2006, she played the voice of Mommy Martian in the 'Mission to Mars' episode of the children's television series The Backyardigans, in which she sang an original song, Almost Everything Is Boinga Here. That same year, Keys nearly suffered a mental breakdown. Her grandmother had died and her family was heavily dependent on her. She felt she needed to 'escape' and went to Egypt for three weeks. She explained: 'That trip was definitely the most crucial thing I've ever done for myself in my life to date. It was a very difficult time that I was dealing with, and it just came to the point where I really needed to—basically, I just needed to run away, honestly. And I needed to get as far away as possible.' Keys released her third studio album, As I Am, in November 2007; it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 742,000 copies in its first week. It gained Keys her largest first week sales of her career and became her fourth consecutive number one album, tying her with Britney Spears for the most consecutive number-one debuts on the Billboard 200 by a female artist. The week became the second largest sales week of 2007 and the largest sales week for a female solo artist since singer Norah Jones' album Feels like Home in 2004. The album has sold nearly four million copies in the United States and has been certified three times Platinum by the RIAA. It has sold nearly six million copies worldwide. Keys received five nominations for As I Am at the 2008 American Music Award and ultimately won two. The album's lead single, No One, peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, becoming Keys' third and fifth number-one single on each chart, respectively. The album's second single, Like You'll Never See Me Again, was released in late 2007 and peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. The album's third single, Teenage Love Affair, peaked at number three on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. She released the fourth single, Superwoman, which peaked at number 82 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 12 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. No One earned Keys the awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song at the 2008 Grammy Awards. Keys opened the ceremony singing Frank Sinatra's 1950s song Learnin' the Blues as a 'duet' with archival footage of Sinatra in video and No One with John Mayer later in the show. Keys also won Best Female R&B Artist during the show. Keys, along with The White Stripes' guitarist and lead vocalist Jack White, recorded the theme song to Quantum of Solace, the first duet in Bond soundtrack history. In 2008, Keys was ranked in at number 80 the Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists. She also received three nominations at the 2009 Grammy Awards and won Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for Superwoman. In an interview with Blender magazine, Keys allegedly said 'Gangsta rap' was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other, 'gangsta rap' didn't exist' and went on to say that it was created by 'the government'. The magazine also claimed she said that Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. Were 'essentially assassinated, their beefs stoked by the government and the media, to stop another great black leader from existing'. Keys later wrote a statement clarifying the issues and saying her words were misinterpreted. Later that year, Keys was criticized by anti-smoking campaigners after billboard posters for her forthcoming concerts in Indonesia featured a logo for the A Mild cigarette brand sponsored by tobacco firm Philip Morris. She apologized after discovering that the concert was sponsored by the firm and asked for 'corrective actions'. In response, the company withdrew its sponsorship. Keys collaborated with record producer Swizz Beatz to write and produce Million Dollar Bill for Whitney Houston's seventh studio album, I Look to You. Keys had approached Clive Davis for permission to submit a song for the album. Keys also collaborated with recording artist Jay-Z on the song Empire State of Mind from his 2009 album, The Blueprint 3. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and became her fourth number-one single on that chart. The following month, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers honored Keys with the Golden Note Award, an award given to artists 'who have achieved extraordinary career milestones'. She collaborated with Spanish recording artist Alejandro Sanz for Looking for Paradise, which topped the Hot Latin Songs chart. Keys released her fourth studio album, The Element of Freedom, in December 2009. It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, selling 417,000 copies in its first week. As part of the promotional drive for the album, she performed at the Cayman Island Jazz Festival on December 5, the final night of the three day festival which will be broadcast on Black Entertainment Television (BET). The album's lead single, Doesn't Mean Anything, has peaked at number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100. Keys was ranked as the top R&B recording artist of the 2000–2009 decade by Billboard magazine and ranked at number five as artist of the decade, while her song, No One, was ranked at number six on the magazine's songs of the decade. In the United Kingdom, The Element of Freedom became Keys' first album to top the UK Albums Chart. According to Songfacts, Keys said regarding the title of her fifth studio album, Girl On Fire. 'Before making this record, in some ways I felt like a lion locked in a cage. I felt like a girl misunderstood that no one really knew, I felt like it was time to stop making excuses for any part of my life that I wanted to change. Once I made that choice I became a Girl on Fire, the lion broke free!!' The title track will be made available on iTunes and radio on September 4, 2012. In May 2009, Swizz Beatz announced that he and Keys were romantically involved, and in May 2010, a representative for Keys and Swizz Beatz confirmed that they were engaged and expecting a child together. During the time of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the couple took part of a union and had the unborn child blessed in a Zulu ceremony, which took place in the Illovo suburb of South Africa. Keys and Swizz Beatz were married on the French island of Corsica on July 31, 2010. On October 14, 2010, Keys gave birth to a son, Egypt Daoud Ibarr Dean, in New York City. Alicia Augello Cook (born January 25, 1981), better known by her stage name Alicia Keys, is an American recording artist, musician and actress. The album's lead single, Fallin', spent six weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The album's second single, A Woman's Worth, peaked at number three on the same chart. The following year, the album was reissued as Remixed & Unplugged in A Minor, which included eight remixes and seven unplugged versions of the songs from the original. It sold 4.4 million copies in the United States and was certified four times Platinum by the RIAA. It sold nine million copies worldwide, becoming the sixth biggest-selling album by a female artist and the second biggest-selling album by a female R&B artist. The singles You Don't Know My Name and If I Ain't Got You both reached the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and the third single, Diary, entered the top ten. The title derived from one of her poems, 'Love and Chains' from the line: 'I don't mind drinking my tears for water.' She said the title is the foundation of her writing because 'everything I have ever written has stemmed from my tears of joy, of pain, of sorrow, of depression, even of question'. 'Girl on Fire', the single, is struggling a bit on the US charts, and the video was supposed to be something 'on fire' so it would help sales.but this can actually make the song semi-sink on the charts further more since I'm sure most people will change channels once they get bored of the selfless 'housewife' story. Buy The baddest madness [Explicit]: Read Digital Music Reviews - Amazon.com. Why not Zoidberg? Lovecraft, everyone’s favorite insensitive hikikomori! The pulp horror author who followed in the footsteps of Edgar Allan Poe, and ended up a huge inspiration for Stephen King. Lovecraft is famous for creating the Cthulhu mythos, in which humanity and all its achievements is less than a dust speck in the grand cosmos, because the real movers and shakers are none other than. These otherworldly creatures are so powerful and so sublime and so spooky, just thinking about them for too long might make your head explode. Pictured: Pure horror, in both of its unfathomable forms But seriously though, At the Mountains of Madness is a great read, so long as you’re cool with I don’t know, older stuff. And by that I mean lots and lots and lots and LOTS of description. I don’t think there’s a single line of dialogue in this thing? It’s very different from a book you’d pick off a shelf at Barnes and Noble (well, so long as it isn’t in the classic lit section). A detailed plot summary of Mountains would probably be shorter than your average back-of-the-book blurb, as not much actually happens? Let’s see: Once upon a time, some scientist dudes (none of whom are characters with personalities or backstories) go to Antarctica! This place was pretty creepy back in the early 1900s, since nobody knew much of what was down there. There could have been anything down there robot snowmen, talking owl pirates, even sharkbergs. But of course, there wasn’t anything ridiculous like that. Just aliens called the elder things, giant albino penguins, and the biggest and baddest spliced sludge creature of them all: the shoggoth. Spoiler Alert? — () And that’s the story. Our protagonist is just writing down everything he observes about Antarctica, most of which is ice and a spooky atmosphere (oppressive, overwhelming nothingness). But there’s the huge ancient city to explore too, and finally after a hundred or so pages there’s an alien to run away from. The moral of the story is don’t mess with aliens! Stay the hell away from Antarctica! And humanity is NOTHING, damn it! Some people will read Lovecraft and find it pure drivel. “Nothing happens! ![]() It’s just a guy going on and on and on and ON about nothing!” In other words, Lovecraft was?! In his defense though, if he tells us too much about the actual horrors, we would all go insane. ![]() ![]() Respect your elders! — () But what about all of Lovecraft’s fans? This fellow had to become famous for some reason. In part I imagine it’s just the unique concepts he is getting across, which have been captivating imaginations and influencing aspiring horror authors for decades now. But the writing itself is really worth reading–no, absorbing. Check out how he describes the mountains (of madness): “It was as if these stark, nightmare spires marked the pylons of a frightful gateway into forbidden spheres of dream, and complex gulfs of remote time, space, and ultra-dimensionality. I could not help feeling that they were evil things—mountains of madness whose farther slopes looked out over some accursed ultimate abyss. That seething, half-luminous cloud background held ineffable suggestions of a vague, ethereal beyondness far more than terrestrially spatial, and gave appalling reminders of the utter remoteness, separateness, desolation, and aeon-long death of this untrodden and unfathomed austral world.” It’s as unwieldy as it is melodramatic, and it’s this sort of tone that permeates most every paragraph of the entire novella. And if you play a drinking game in which you take a shot for every time Lovecraft throws in a ridiculously theatrical adjective, you’ll be dead sooner than you can shout “Tekeli-li! Antarctica used to be so cool — () Bottom Line: At the Mountains of Madness is not a character-driven or plot-driven piece, but is much more about its setting and (especially) its atmosphere. Large chunks of it are also much more “Lovecraft’s Guide to Aliens!” than an actual story. As such, it’s not exactly a page-turner, and I would not say all of its build-up results in a particularly astounding payoff. However, it can certainly get you in the foreboding and ominous Halloween mood! Experience the terror for yourself this season, should you have the time. |
